About US

Geoconfluence is an initiative of Department of Applied Geophysics in association with Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), IIT(ISM) Student Chapter, European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), IIT(ISM) Student Chapter, Society of Petroleum Geophysicists (SPG), IIT(ISM) Student Chapter and Indian Geophysical Union (IGU), IIT(ISM) Student Chapter.

The word ‘confluence’ literally means the meeting of two rivers, Geoconfluence is that congregation of the greatest minds from the geo-scientific community who dare to let their imaginations run wild and help improve the quality of life. Geoconfluence is IIT(ISM) Dhanbad’s annual Geo-Technical fest which endeavours to bring young minds from across the country and test their skills in the presence of eminent Geoscientists who are ever ready to share their pearls of wisdom.

Its first edition was held in March 2013 with the motto of integrating academia and geo-technology to gear up young minds to meet future industrial challenges and provide them a platform to present their research. It is a memorable experience to be in this excellent amalgamation of youth versus experience and is always a delight to find out who will capture your imagination.

India remains one of the least explored countries and could hold large potential resources. 15 basins out of a total 26 sedimentary basins in India spread over on-land, offshore and deep water, are estimated to hold prognosticated hydrocarbon resources of over 200 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Out of these, hydrocarbon-in-place, volume of 80 billion barrels has been established through exploration activities. There is still a significant ‘yet to find’ hydrocarbon resources of over 120 billion barrels. There is also huge potential of unconventional resources in the form of Gas Hydrates, Coal bed methane, Shale gas, etc.

This, demands for the young, technical minds of Geoscience background to find out specific areas of research and contribute to meet the future industrial challenges. Geoconfluence provides a platform to these young entrepreneurs of Geoscience to present their research before eminent geo-scientists and industry professionals. The fest aims to be an annual platform for veterans in the oil and gas industry to share knowledge and expertise with academia and young minds across nations.

This year’s Geoconfluence is an attempt to ponder this perspective. We take immense pleasure in presenting the 5th edition of Geoconfluence. To be held from 27th to 29th January, 2017. The stage is again set for a perfect meet of academia, alumnus and industry. The symposium will constitute of many competitions, workshops, exhibitions and guest lectures to provide real time solutions to real time problems faced in the petroleum industry.
